I served as FO with C/1/20 from about Aug 1969 until about Feb 1970. I was
FDO in Charlie Battery from about Feb 1970 until August 1970. In the
Davidson photos, 31, 47 (top of head) and 48, I'm incorrectly identified as Lt.
Gallagher. Great picture of PFC Charles Duck with Lt McD -- I went to OCS with
him. Good luck to you all -- you earned it.

In country 6 February 69 and got to leave 15 March 70. Alpha Battery was
jumping (air mobile) for the first few months but then we got to settle down on
LZ Debby (used to be Thunder) and life was a little easier. Had a quad 50
just below the 105's and a 155 just above us. We liked it a little better
after we built a club but nobody ever mistook it for home. Ever since then
I always say that life is good.

I was in B battery Nov. 68 to Nov. 69, LZ Cork till April, then, San Juan Hill,
I used to be on Sgt Weaver's gun until it was sent I think to C battery. Because
I cut hair, (known as the company barber) the captain didn't want me to go, so I
was put on gun 2 with Sgt. Worhty. At San Juan Hill we got a Sgt. known as
"Mama", got his nick name from me for, "ALRIGHT, WHO DIDN'T TAKE THEIR MILARIA
PILL?" "ALEZANDA, DID YOU TAKE YOUR MILARIA PILL? yes sgt! ALRIGHT SOME BODY'S
LYIN." That was Mama! worst person I ever met.

when overrun on 2 Nov. 68', injured finger during fire mission & sent to rear
for 3 days then sent back to the field. On 2 Feb. 69' I suffered an injury to my
back and was sent to Camp Drake Hosp. in Osaka, Japan and returned to the field
on 14 March 69' to A Battery (jump battery) and I remained there until I had
altercations with a Lt. and was sent to the rear 3 weeks before going home in

Just wanted to clarify earlier post, much of which was wrong! Have been
successfully working to rebuild separate memories from dreams over the past year
or two and wanted to make it right. Original post: "I was a Forward Observer
with "B" Battery from September, 1967 until I was transferred to the 3/16th up
on Hawk Hill in mid April, 1968. I also had to replace Lt. Eddie Harris (an
original unit member of "B" Battery) when he was KIA in April 1968. I also did a
second, though shorter, tour as an Aerial Observer from December 1968 until
July, 1969."
Correct post: I was a Forward Observer with "B" Battery from October, 1967 until
I was transferred to the 3/16th up to Hawk Hill as a FO for "A" Troop 1/1
Cavalry in mid February, 1968. In May became LNO for 1/1 Cavalry when Jim
Wambold left. I also did a second, though shorter, tour as an Division Artillery
Aerial Observer from December 1968 until July, 1969. Would love to hear from
anyone that remembers me from OCS/Hawaii/Vietnam.

My thanks to Kitty Millard for tracking me down. I deployed to the RVN in
July 1968 with the 1/82 Artillery, out of Chu Lai, as a young 2LT. I was infused
into the 6/11 later that year – don’t have the exact month, but have pictures on
LZ Cork at Christmas time. First assigned to Bravo Battery as an FO/FDO. Then
assigned to HQ Service Battery in early ’69 as a Bn FDO. Looking through “Guest
Entries,” I found some familiar names – Ron Baltruzak, Fred White (both OCS
classmates), Larry Carpenter, Bob Beverly – I know there must others but I’ve
lost a lot brain cells in the last 40+ years. Still have pics I will try to scan
and post.

This is a wonderful site; and we so enjoyed listening to the music provided from
the 60's. We both lost good friends who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our
country while serving in Viet Nam. My very dearest friend and confidante was
killed in action on March 13th, 1967 - his name was Lonnie Edward Parker. He was
from Success, Arkansas. If anyone out there knows {knew} Lonnie in Viet Nam,
please, let me hear from you. I have a cousin who served three tours of duty
there, his name was David Leonard. I would love to hear from David as we've lost
touch over the years. He lives in or around St. Louis, MO. We have another
friend, Tony and his wife Mary, who hailed originally from Buffalo, N.Y. and now
live in Savannah, GA. We would love to hear from them. We know Tony suffers alot
from Agent Orange and hope he is doing better. And lastly, one of our dearest
friends in the whole world, is Rudy Shotts who originally hailed from Los
Angeles or San Diego and now resides with his wonderful wife, Ingrid, and family
in Dover, {Magnolia} Delaware. Rudy suffers from the effects of Agent Orange and
from Malaria contracted in Viet Nam. We see them weekly and keep track, but
would love to also hear from the others mentioned. You Viet Nam Veterans are our
favorites and you deserve so VERY MUCH MORE than what America has given you.
Please know; were it in our power, you'd have EVERY need met! We honor all of
you. Roger and Barbara {Leonard} Richardson

Was assigned to C-6/11th in 1968 on a firebase south of Duc Pho. I was
immediately sent out as a RTO for D Company 1/20th LIB. I served with them
through most of my tour. I've seen much mentioned on this web site of LZ Cork. I
was on the lead chopper that first took that hill. It was a cold LZ when we
landed, but took a few mortar rounds shortly after. We secured the hill until
Artillery came in and a short while after that, walked of it and worked the area
around it. Was a very dangerous area to work. Sorry to read about the guys on
that hill that were over run. I rejoined C-6/11 for the last few months of my
tour, but remember only a few people. CPL Liga, and Mike Raguso. I was one of
the lucky ones to make it home without a scratch. God Bless and Take Care.

Well over 40 years, I got a phone call from Larry about reunion in Texas, if all
goes right I'll be there. Saving pennies now. I'm looking for old orders, if I
can find, will find more guys. Sgt. Cherry took me off my gun to drive for
Captain, it was alright until that day Sgt..McCarthy told me when I got back
from the BOB HOPE SHOW that we were going to jump a few guns. Jan.2 1970 that
day I found out what the different is between heaven and hell. I have a lot to
talk about, but I'm not too good with this computer stuff. LT.Right was FO that
night. One thing on the good side that might help some you remember who I AM,
the cooks let me use the mess hall one night and the little DAGO boy cook up
pizza you could smell it all over the hill. I have never had to cut a pizza in
so many pieces, put on your thinking hat guys. Will be real nice. Hope to see
everyone again. One more thing, I had to show the movies and every time the film
broke you guys went nuts. Maybe it was the beer. God bless all who made it home,
and a prayer for the ones that didn't the radio man. Does anybody remember Henry
Hahn, I got some pic's of him if I can find them.

Thad and Larry, please ck your info on my current email, as I have retired and
don't have the CSU email anymore. I was with C-6/11 from April 1967 (came with
others from Fort Ord) to sometime in 1968 (can't remember exactly). I was
Battery Recorder and the driver for the XO Jim Rys at Schofield. Then on Thunder
did RTO/Recorder, Chart Operator, and then Computer (i.e. with slip stick).
Higgins ran the FADAC (but I could calc the fire mission faster that it could
with the original data!). I believe we were on LZ Center, when we were told they
needed to move some people out of the unit, so not everyone would have the same
DROS date. Ask the other FDC guys about sleeping in the bunker on Center. It was
underground, and the walls were lined with empty ammo boxes, and there was a
rat's nest in every one of them. I went to D-1/198, and then to the FDC at
Americal Div in Chu Lai.

I came in country Nov 3 1970 ETS 26 Oct 1971. Stood down unit in Chu Lai.
Went on every mission, was a jack of all trades from munitions, set bunger lines
in Duc Pho and on several LZ's, driving for the company commander to being a
cook. I was suppose to be driving the truck that the boys got killed in on the
way to to the DMZ, got pulled to drive the Col's jeep, pulled guard duty that
first night there with no commo, no flares and some guy I didn't know, what a
fubar that was. Yea I was there when Kelley went out when he didn't have to.
Does any one out there Jim Duncan, Lee Easton, Rudy Baker, Jim Rose. Does

Welcome Home Brothers!! 40 years, been a long time. I came to Nam with the
1/82nd Arty. unit from Washington in July 68' and around Oct. was infused into A
Btry. 6/11th. Sometime between Oct. 68' and Feb. 69' I caught my finger in a 105
breach, the medic wrapped it and due to monsoon weather in the DucPho highlands
on (?)LZ Pepper or Cork(?) the medevacs couldn't come in till the next day when
I was flown out to a base hospital and sent back to A Btry. a couple days later.
Would appreciate hearing from someone who recalls this. I think I was on a 105
named Aquarius after the old hippie revolution. Can't remember names but this
was a regular 105 we used in many jumps. I was also medevac out 2 Feb. 69' and
sent to Camp Drake Hosp. in Osaka, Japan until my return to A Btry. in mid
March. Thanks for this site and hopefully some brothers will be brought together
again from the battery. God Bless you all!

Sometime around October 1968 I had been in country around 6 months Assigned to
SVC battery 3/16 artillery, Chu Lai. I was infused with a new unit in country
for a short time. The new unit was also artillery and located on LZ Uptight. I
believe I was assigned with Al Ryder who was a bartender from Long Island NY
prior to being drafted. Our Sargeant was an Italian guy from Brooklyn I forget
his name. One other guy I remember was a kid from Alabama whose favorite
alcoholic drink was rootbeer and scotch. Another memorable character was a Sgt
Burns who was assigned to the adjacent gun. I was infused from 3/16 with one
other guy named Duane Bushar who prior to being drafted was a stone cutter from
Wisconsin. I don't know why but after all these years I Googled LZ Uptight and
came up with Al Ryders website. I always wondered how every one fared. When I
was there things were pretty hot. I was glad to see so many guys made it out.

I went to Ft. Sill for 13E20 (Artillery intelligence, Fire Direction Center) AIT
training, and then onto Viet Nam. At first I was in Charlie Battery, at the time
we moved from Bronco to LZ Liz. I was there when we lost 3-4 soldiers en route
to LZ Liz, driving over a high explosives charge. I remember Rich Kelly working
with me and then deciding to go out to the field. He was killed shortly after
that. While with Charlie Btry I also adjusted artillery for a time. I got
reassigned to HHB and the FDC for Battalion and was there when we went to Dong
Ha and Khe Sanh and the DMZ. I still hear from Bill Cording (D and HQ Btry) and
Russ Oullette. I can remember thinking while we were up in Khe Sanh and that
Operation Lom San 719 in support of the ARVNs into Laos, that up north you
couldn't tell the difference between the good and bad guys. I think the kids
over in Iraq have the same problem now.

I'm one of the original NCO present at Schofield Barracks Hawaii, who helped to
train the Battery "A" gunners and asst. gunners on the 105mm Howitzer as well,
as train many of the battalion men into one of the best artillery battery units
within the Americal Division, the 11th Inf. Arty. Battery Cpt. Goldman, Sergeant
Umi, Sergeant McNicols, Sergeant Spade and myself, along with others as well
that helped train the 11th Inf. Arty. I had the base piece or center gun that
was manned by gunner Steve Eckloff and asst. gunner was Roy Felix. After captain
Goldman left the unit, it wasn't the same. I miss many of the old guys I served

To all the soldiers, My father, John Curbow, passed away last month. I have fond
memories of his Vietnam stories, and have great love and respect for our country
and the soldiers who fought and continue to fight for our freedom. I only have
bits of information and I will share that with you, maybe if you knew Daddy you
can email me. Daddy was an FO in the artillery. I know he was wounded 3 times.
The first time minor. The second a good bit of shrapnel, and the third he lost
his foot. That was in southern Vietnam. The letters we have notified my Mother
of his injury. The return address on these read: Mat 1V-77 advisory team 20. I
don't know if he was still connected with the 6th battalion then or not. One
name I do remember is Perez. He was with Daddy when he was wounded. Perez
slipped his St. Christopher medalion around Daddy's neck and started crossing
Daddy, reverting back to spanish. Daddy had to call for his own dustoff before
he passed out. Perez thought he was a goner!!! My Daddy gave my oldest child the
St. Christopher before she and my mom went on a trip 3 years ago. We will always
cherish that story and momento from Vietnam. Daddy served in 1967-68.He lost his
foot on sept.4,1968. We have a good many pictures. Daddy was a writer, coach,
teacher, and poet. He has a book of Vietnam poems [which are rather weird]. He
has won several awards for short stories about Vietnam. One is "Easter Morning"
He was in a battle for a hill and the guys were all getting sick. When we
finally took the hill, the VC had made a dam using the dead bodies. He also has
a story "The Last Day", it is a very moving story of the last day he ever ran.
He won the mile relay at state in high school and planned to run college track
when he returned home. He was a true competitor and leaves that trait in many of
his 4 children and 13 grandchildren. If you have any information on Daddy please
email me. Thanks, Rhonda Curbow Brown [God bless each of you]

Found this site because of the Vet Center. This is fantastic. I was the only

met most of you along the way. Flew in and out of Duc Pho more times than I can

My name is Jim Emery and I served with D Battery 6th 11th from 10/68 through
9/69. I signed the guest book quite some time ago. I am looking for any
information on the D Battery Chief of Smoke, 1st Sgt. Carter, that I served
under on LZ Amy (November 68) through at least March of 1969. Any information
would be appreciated. Also, I was wondering why the website does not show any of
the LZ’s that D Battery occupied. I realize there were quite a few and maybe
that is the reason.

I'm sorry to hear of John Curbow's passing. I went to Southwest High in Atlanta
with John and his brother Jamey in the early 60's. On the U.S.S. Gordon, John
caught up with me on deck to say Hi. Until that time, I didn't know we were in
the same group. He was an officer, so we didn't have too much time to visit, but
I do know he was wounded by a rigged shell on patrol and got shrapnel wounds on
his back for his first Purple Heart. When I was staged to come home, John came
to see me to wish me well, but right after that he was wounded again by a Chicom
mine and lost part of his foot. We visited at his parent's house when he got
home. He taught at West Georgia College in Carrollton, Ga. and did some
coaching, I think. He was a good guy and I have thought of him since.

Just recieved a letter this AM from John Curbow's wife. She was going thru
John's mail and found the battery roster that I sent him. "John passed away on
May 24th. He had fallen at my retirement party and broken his kneecap. He had
surgery, but died from a blood clot going to his lungs." That was a quote from
his wife about John. Strange how things go in life. I do believe he had 2 purple
hearts and do not know what else. Her address is Kay Curbow. 445 Roy North Road,
Carrollton, GA 30117. If you could post something on the site, I am sure it
would be appreciated --- If anyone wants to send a card they could email me or
maybe you.

I was the forward observer attached to Bravo 4/3 from August 1969- January 1970.
I was then assigned as the artillery liaison officer to the 4/3 on San Juan Hill
from then until I DEROSed in August 1970. We saw some hellacious action,
probably none worse than the night of January 2, 1970 when Bravo Company's NDP
on Hill 285 was overrun by a battalion of NVA. The battle started near midnight
and lasted until after dawn, with 29 NVA bodies found that next morning
scattered across the hill. Unexploded 82 mm mortar shells and chi-com grenades
were all over the hill (one unexploded chi-com was about a foot from where I was
sleeping in my hootch). We lost 7 men from the company and the artillery battery
(A Battery I think) that was due to come in the next morning and lay guns to
create a fire base. Much more information is on
http://www.buffgrunt.com/ the great
website that Tommy Skiens has created. My best regards to all my brothers in the
6-11 and the 4-3 on San Juan Hill.

I was in Duc Pho from Nov 68 - Feb 70. I was at BN level FDC in Duc Pho. Bravo
Battery was the one I coordinated and did FDC for. I believe Capt. John Howlett
was my CO for awhile. Sgt. Joe Wiggins was a good friend and in charge of us
guys in BN FDC. Dennis Landsman, Tom Byledball (sp) are a couple names I
remember. I would relieve some of the guys on Bravo Battery FDC when they came
back for R&R to Duc Pho. I went out to LZ Cork with the guys there. We got
over-run by a sapper squad one night. That was my worse time in Vietnam. What a
great bunch of guys. I remember being there on either New Year's or July 4th.
What a great night of flares and other sky lighting we had! I wish I remembered
more of the guys. It would be nice to be at some reunion. Bob Beverley

I took command of C Battery at Schofield Barracks on 23 June 1967. I deployed by
air with the rest or the 11th Brigade advance party in early December of 1967.
In late December the main body of troops and equipment arrived in-country by
troopship. C Battery occupied LZ THUNDER south of Duc Pho just before Christmas.
I was promoted to major on 13 February 1968 and transferred to to Americal
Division Artillery S-3 staff. I departed RVN on 7 November 1968 to escort the
remains of my comrade and best friend, Major Robert G. Hufschmid, who was killed
in action on 2 November at LZ CORK while on OPERATION VERNON LAKE. Bob's wife,
Suzy, and my wife, Bonnie, shared a condominium in Honolulu while Bob and I were
deployed. Bonnie officially escorted Suzy back to West Point as I was escorting
Bob's remains for burial at West Point. On 1 November, I had visited the 11th
brigade HQ to attend an OPERATION VERNON LAKE planning brief and to inform Bob
that I had arranged for both of us to come back together to clear our wives'
condo. We had lunch together after the briefing and Bob expressed unease about
this operation which was scheduled to be his last before returning home. We said
our farewells and I left. That night I called my wife on the MARS radio to let
her and Suzy know that Bob and I would be returning together and to pass on
Bob's love to Suzy. The next day, 2 November, Bob was killed in action. We did
come back together.

Just found this great site. Was in Hq. Co. FDC (Bn. FDC) with responsibilities
for checking firing data for both Alpha and Charlie Battery (Charlie was on LZ
Bronco-DucPho). Because of PTSD I can't put any names with faces from many
photos I took. Found names of HQ. FDC guys I served with: Robert Beverly,
Johnathan Kolpeci, Joe Wiggs, Bill Henry, Tex, Capt. Howlett and can't find
names of others. Any of you who read this and remember me (April 1969-May 1970
always at Bn. FDC on Bronco) pls. get in touch with me. Remember Jan. 1970 when
in contact with Alpha Battery, Lt. Robert Carrol Wright CO, was killed by small
arms fire in perimeter breach. Got in touch with his mother 10 yrs. ago and
found that he was awarded DSC and a training facility was named after him at Ft.
Sill, Ok. with a bronze plaque of his likeness in the firefight. He pushed a
couple of his men down and took the brunt of the attack taking out 5 cong while
saving his men. You can find info. out about him and other KIA on the Vietnam

I was a very young 20 year old 2nd Lieutenant who had the opportunity to serve
as Headquarter Battery Commander when the 6/11 was formed in Hawaii. Eighteen
lieutenants arrived fresh out of OCS in Fort Sill Oklahoma in April 1967 to fill
the officer positions. I had a great First Sergeant who kept me straight. I do
not remember his name after all these years but I do remember his willingness to
put up with me and teach me the basics. In September of 1967 some captains
arrived and I went to Charlie battery as an forward observer. I served only a
few months in field in Nam before I came back to battalion as the fire direction
officer and the battalion air observer. In October I went back to Charlie
battery as the battery fire direction officer. Lt Jim Rys figured out that if we
extended 3 months on our tour we could get out of the service six months earlier
to go back to college. I did serve with the original D battery under Captain
Gamble during the infamous battle of Pink Ville. No one wants to remember that
one.

I was involved with the initial training for the unit while at Schofield
Barracks. We only had two Artillery officers in addition to the Battalion
Medical Officer and the Signal Corps Officer. I was only with the unit for a
short period of time (about 3 months) due to my enlistment being completed in
December 1967. I was the CO for HQ, A, B and C Batteries. We were training 5 1/2
days a week and were receiving men from Vietnam as well as straight out of
advanced training. I now practice law with the public defender's office in

I would first like to say a very special thank you to everyone who has
contributed to making this all come together. I have thought about many of you
through out the years with fond memories in the bitts and peaces that I have. I
have lost a lot of memories but the ones that do pop in to my head are all great
ones of the men that I served and fought with. I also miss my friends that are
no longer with us. I am looking forward to seeing some of you at the reunion and
if you can not make it don’t hesitate to give me a call or e-mail if you would
like. Your, “On Time Friend”, Peter Dumar

It's been a long time since we parted ways. The memories of our times together
in Hawaii are filled with excitement and fun as well as a lot of hard work.
Remember the day we shipped out. All of us spread out over the lawn with all our
equipment. Then the ride down to the docks. Walking up the gang plank with all
our gear. Remember the day the ship started that slow roll from one side to the
other and everyone SICK. Well believe it are not most of us made the trip and
are still here to tell about it. I wish all of you that review these pages the
best and may God be with you Always. He's certainly taken care of me.

I visited the moving wall when it was in Pocatello ID. and started to wonder if
there was anyone out there that was in Duc Pho during 70-71. I have a lot of
good memories and lots of bad ones, hope all that made it back did as well with
their life as I have. I remember the Dung Ha jump and how dusty it was there,
could not wait to get back to Duc Pho . If anyone knows the where abouts of a
man named Frank Fitland please let me know, Thank You and Welcome Home

Hi Guys, After 40 years we have finally made connection. I'm still mind boggled
by it all. I thought I would never hear from any body from my old army days. My
wife, Mona, and I are looking forward to attending the reunion, and to seeing
all of you there. I hope my memory will serve me well in trying to recognize all
you guys. I haven't changed a bit (editor's comment: his eye sight isn't so good
any more), but I might have trouble recognizing all of you. I suppose for the
Captain's sake we should all try to be there on time. Thanks to everybody who is
working on the committee. See you in Reno! Doug

Well Men---Welcome Home!!! I just commented to my wife Jane that 39 years ago I
went on my first cruise--Then I thought about it! Thank God for the forty years
that have passed. Seems not that long ago we boarded the Gordon from Pier 40 in
Hawaii bound for Nam. To all those who did not come back and those that have
passed--May you rest in the Peace of the Lord. Just a few weeks ago, I
celebrated the anniversary of my return home--Thanksgiving 1968. Where have the
years gone--raising a family, worked 36 1/2 years and now am coasting on
vacation till retirement. Have joined a group of guys and gals that honor fallen
heros from the current war and all other former military. Check out the site---patriotguard.org--
Thanks to Jim Wambold for all his time developing this site and all others that
keep it rolling. On Time. Sir

My first real Army assignment was as an FO for B-1/20 Inf. Graduated from
college and commissioned in June, 1969. Officers' Basic at Sill, Airborne and
Ranger School at Benning, and then 10 kilometers of QL 1 from Duc Pho to Mo Duc,
and east to the South China Sea. We worked other parts of Quang Ngai province,
including My Lai, 2 years after. I lost an Inf Co Cdr, and an RTO to hostile
fire while there. Got my only Purple Heart in that assignment. The most
interesting thing that happened to me was finding out that I had gone to college
with one of my RTOs and we had washed dishes side by side in the same restaurant
as college students. I spent 20 years in the Army, and never saw anybody from
6/11 FA or 1/20 Inf after leaving RVN. On Time !

I wanted to write this comment on your page cause my father served in Vietnam in
66-67. His name is Sgt. Frank Cromie. I think he was Wolfhound. Well, he
passed away w/ cancer due to agent orange. Ihave been trying to find any
pictures of him during his tour of Vietnam for my mom. Would you know were I
would go to to find pictures? Thank you.
Webmaster's Note: Lisa, in performing some internet research I found that your Dad, Franklin Cromie, served as Artillery Forward Observer to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry (Wolfhounds), 25th Infantry Division. The Artillery units in that Division were 1/8, 2/9, 7/11, 3/13, 2/77, 6/77. Hopefully, this information may be of help in your internet search. jkw

Well, maybe we were not the "greatest generation" but we seemed to have overcome
an enemy who wore pajamas and didn't have a front line! Thanks so much to
Larry, Terry, Cap and Tom for all their efforts to get the reunion started.
I am especially thankful as it caused me to enter the world of e-mail and
assorted computer venues for the first time. Man, isn't this porno
something!! I am really looking forward to see you all next spring - lets
all wear very large name tags!! In the meantime, left 100, drop 50, and fire for
effect. On Time -- or there abouts.
